Brief Psychoeducational Parenting Program [1-2-3 Magic]: An Evaluation and 1-Year Follow-up
This study evaluated a brief psychoeducational
group-based program delivered in community agencies
and targeted at parents of 3- and 4-year-olds whose
parents believed they were having trouble managing
their children's behavior. The program was developed
and piloted in a university hospital setting where facilitators
were trained. It uses a commercial video,
1-2-3 Magic (Phelan, 1990). It aims at providing
simple, clear strategies, such as timeout and rewards, to
reduce the coercive and conflicted patterns of interaction
between parent and child. It stresses the importance
of eliminating parental nagging, yelling, hitting,
and critical or hostile comments. It provides examples
of positive and negative parenting behaviors and practical
suggestions for overcoming different forms of
child resistance.
