Ask Dr. Phelan: 3 Parenting Jobs
Our question today is from Caroline, who writes:
Q: No offense, but what about the parent that doesn't have time to read a 300-page book to get their child under control?
I'm not sure exactly what to tell you, but my first reaction is that I really think it'll be worth your while to spend four or five hours learning a parenting program to get your child under control if you're currently having trouble. It’s an investment in your future. It’s investment in your child's future, as well.
If you do 1-2-3 Magic, you're going to learn three parenting jobs.
- Dealing with obnoxious behavior (arguing, yelling, whining, fighting, screaming, teasing, and temper tantrums)
- Encouraging positive behavior (getting up and out in the morning, doing homework, eating, going to bed, staying in bed)
- Strengthening your relationship with your child, or bonding. If you do the first two jobs pretty well, a lot of the bonding takes care of itself!
I hope you'll consider it. Whatever parenting program you use, it's going to take you more than 15 minutes to learn it. I hope you'll give 1-2-3 Magic some consideration, and I think you'll find it's a good investment in your future.
