How to Deal With Whining and Pouting

If there's one thing that drives parents crazy, it's whining.

Similar to tantrums, children whine when:

  1. They don't want to do an activity (think, watching cartoons before school)
  2. They do want to do an activity and you won't let them (staying up past bedtime)
  3. They want a thing and you won't let them have it (cookies before dinner, anyone?)

Whining is one of the six main testing and manipulation techniques that Dr. Phelan discusses in the book, and today we're taking a dive into:

  • Why kids whine

  • How effective whining is as a manipulation technique

  • How pouting and whining are different

  • Where to draw the line between allowing and encouraging kids to own their emotions, and knowing when we need to cut off the whining

  • What you can do to get your kids to stop whining and pouting
