What does it mean to be a "Manager Mom"?
And do you want to be one? Women (moms) often take on a lot of the mental load of keeping the household running, groceries stocked, meals planned, doctor appointments made, school spirit days tracked, and more.
In this video, Dr. Phelan answers the following questions:
What is the Manager Mom Epidemic?
How did we get to this point?
What are some of the side effects of this?
What do we do about it?
Why do moms take on so much of the load?
Dr. Phelan says that many moms think that they need to be in charge of managing the entire household. The Manager Mom Epidemic is when the house relies too much on mom and can only run smoothly when mom's organizational activities are present.
What are some of the side effects of the Manager Mom Epidemic?
First of all, Dr. Phelan says it's a total violation of human beings' built-in instinct for fairness. Meaning moms can feel resentment towards their partners for not carrying their fair share of their load when Manager Mom Mode happens in families. Secondly, we don't teach our kids to be independent. We do not give them stuff to do that gives them a meaningful contribution to the family.
